

Generally, there are 4 career progression tracks that will allow you to pursue career goals according to your different interests and competencies.
Specialist Track is designed for doctors who wish to be trained as Specialists.
Clinical Research Track is designed for doctors who wish to work primarily as clinician-scientists or researchers.
Resident Physician Track is designed for doctors who do not aspire to be specialists, but prefer to remain working in the hospital setting, after gaining sufficient clinical experience as a practicing Medical Officer.
Family Physician Track is designed for doctors who attain the Masters of Medicine (Family Medicine) and who wish to pursue a career in primary healthcare/ family medicine within the Polyclinics.
House Officer Training is a mandatory component of medical training for all fresh medical graduates who have completed their basic medical degree. It is a period of clinical apprenticeship that aims to equip the new medical graduate with the basic skills of clinical practice. House Officer Training will last for 1 year and house officers are required to perform 3 or more clinical postings (each ranging from 2 - 6 months).
Eligibility Criteria
Fresh medical graduate who wishes to apply for House Officer position must satisfy either of the following conditions:
Medical Officers are qualified doctors who are immediately responsible for the total management of patients in the wards. They are required to help House Officers in the clerking of cases and supervise/help House Officers in the performance of procedures.
Medical Officers undergo two 6-monthly rotations in a year through a Medical Officer Posting Exercise (MOPEX) where Medical Officers are empowered to choose their own postings to suit their own developmental needs and career interest.
Changeover dates for the postings are in May and November each year.
Upon appointment as Medical Officers, doctors who wish to be trained as specialists can apply to the Joint Committee for Specialist Training (JCST) to undergo Basic Specialist Training (BST) in one of the 14 Basic Specialties.
Eligibility Criteria To be eligible for the Medical Officer position, applicants must satisfy the following conditions:
Registrars are experienced doctors with a recognised postgraduate qualification who have completed the Basic Specialist Training (BST). They are primarily responsible for the overall supervision and day-to-day running of the wards, including patient care. In addition, they will supervise and guide House Officers and Medical Officers.
There are 2 types of Registrars namely Advanced Specialist Training (AST) Registrar and Service Registrar.
AST Registrars are doctors who have completed BST and have been appointed by the Joint Committee for Specialist Training (JCST) as Advanced Specialist Trainee to undergo advanced specialist training in one of the 35 advanced specialties.
Service Registrars are doctors who have completed BST who possess a postgraduate degree recognised by the JCST for Advanced Specialist Training, but have been unsuccessful in their AST application or are waiting for a confirmed AST post. These doctors will have to be assessed to be ready and competent to perform the duties & responsibilities of a Registrar before being appointed as Service Registrar.

Resident Physicians are non-specialist doctors whose main role is to provide first-line clinical coverage in clinical departments within hospitals. The Resident Physician Scheme is created to provide an alternative and attractive career track for doctors who do not aspire to be specialists but wishes to remain practicing in a hospital setting.

Family Doctors and Family Physicians are doctors pursuing a general practitioner career within the primary healthcare environment i.e. Polyclinics.
